Undergraduate Internship Awards

Undergraduate degree-seeking students enrolled in any major in the College of Arts and Sciences are invited to apply for internship awards to provide financial support while engaging in an internship, apprenticeship or practicum experience.

Eligibility and requirements

To be eligible, the student must be an Arts and Sciences major enrolled in an Arts and Sciences internship course (listed below) and have obtained an internship prior to receiving award funding. Internships must be one summer or semester in length. Applicants must also provide verification from a faculty member charged with supervising the internship course (faculty internship coordinator) that confirms internship course enrollment, site status, and supervision.

Award and application details

Each awardee receives a $2,000 scholarship that is applied to the student’s financial aid package. If the internship is not successfully completed, the award must be refunded.

Complete and acceptable applications will be prioritized by the following criteria:

Students majoring in a degree program in the College of Arts and Sciences and enrolled full-time or have a history of full-time enrollment. Seniors need not be full-time if they do not require a full-time load to graduate.
Students who have not received a prior internship award under this program.
Depending on the number of applications received, faculty internship coordinators may be asked to help prioritize the applicants if endorsing more than one.

Some sections request additional information. We recommended that you type your essay responses in Word, Google Docs or similar software and then copy and paste them into the Qualtrics form.
Once the application is submitted, faculty internship coordinators will receive an auto-generated email to confirm their support of the student applicant's project. Letters of support are no longer required.
Transcripts are not required.

Award requirements

Award recipients must enroll in an approved College of Arts and Sciences applied learning internship course for 0-9 credit hours. A typical internship requires 45 hours of field work for each credit hour of enrollment. For example, a student enrolled in 6 course credit hours would be expected to complete 270 hours in the field.

These internships will involve supervised and guided hands-on learning in a community or clinical setting.

The awards will only be given to students in advance of their internship and cannot be used for internships that have occurred in the past.

Preference will be given to students who will not receive concurrent funding for the same internship from other sources such as the internship agency or academic department.

Confirming project completion

The faculty internship coordinator will be contacted midway through and at the end of the semester of the internship to confirm whether the student met expectations. If expectations were met, nothing more is required. If the internship coordinator reports at any time during the semester that the student is not meeting expectations, the scholarship could be at risk. The internship site supervisor—the person at the internship placement who oversees the intern's activities—may also be contacted to confirm internship completion.
