3 credits from each of the following four categories, 12 total (at least 6 of which must be at the 300 level or above)
These area requirements focused on the development of foundational interpersonal skills, reasoning, and cultural and social knowledge that will be applied in integrative electives and the capstone. These need not be health-related, but most areas have an option that is health-related. Some area requirements are narrow, requiring one of a limited number of courses; others have more flexibility. - Ethics: articulating moral principles and identifying relevant facts for their application, to reason through ethical dilemmas.
- Scientific and Statistical Reasoning: employing statistical and scientific methods for reaching sound conclusions from empirical data
- Communication and Psychological/Social Understanding: understanding of the individual in social context, and communicating effectively in different settings
- US Multicultural Awareness: recognizing cultural differences in the U.S. and functioning in a multicultural society.
