College of Arts and Sciences Orientation
All students obtaining a College of Arts and Sciences degree (Fall 2024 forward) must take a 1 credit hour orientation course to help them transition to K-State and take advantage of all the resources for student success. Students fulfill the college orientation course requirement by taking DAS 101 or an approved departmental orientation course. The standard college-wide orientation course, DAS 101, will set students on a path of success by introducing them to:
- resources and tools for effective learning and success.
- the breadth of the College of Arts and Sciences as well as the multidisciplinary, well-rounded education the college provides.
- other students, instructors and staff in the college and beyond to foster and model interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration.
- content that fosters self-discovery and future planning and instills an appreciation for the opportunity of education.
DAS 101 offers various special topic sections every semester to accommodate students’ unique interests and needs. The special topic sections will engage students in multidisciplinary topics across the arts and sciences, help students gain a broad perspective, and encourage students to use critical thinking skills in areas of innovation, adaptability and research.
(Special topics descriptions coming soon.)
Some departments in the college offer an approved departmental orientation course that satisfies the orientation requirement. These departmental orientation courses are meant to correlate with programs of study. The departmental orientation courses retain 40% of the content and assignments from the college-wide orientation course, DAS 101, and further introduce students to personalized information pertaining to specific major(s), career options and departmental resources and opportunities.
Faculty/staff/departments wishing to propose special topic sections of DAS 101 or departmental orientation courses should visit the Orientation Topic and Course Proposal page.
