English Language Program Credit Toward Degree Requirements

In the College of Arts & Sciences, credit for English Language Program (ELP) courses is used in different ways for students who are earning the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or the Bachelor of Science (B.S.), the two primary undergraduate degrees we offer.

The B.A. requires that students reach the fourth level of one foreign language, typically a four-semester sequence. For international students whose first language is not English, we treat English as their foreign language and accept up to 15 hours of the ELP language coursework to satisfy the foreign language requirement.

For students pursuing the B.S., we also accept up to 15 hours of ELP coursework, but because those hours do not satisfy any particular basic requirement, they are counted as elective hours toward the minimum of 120 hours required for graduation.
