Medical Laboratory Science Degree Requirements

As part of earning your bachelor's degree, you will fulfill the K-State Core as well as the associated College of Arts and Sciences requirements based on your pursuit of either the Bachelor of Arts route or Bachelor of Science route along with the MLS major specific coursework outlined below.

Biology Requirements

  • BIOL 198 - Principles of Biology Credits: 4 
  • BIOL 441 - Human Body I and BIOL 442 - Human Body II OR KIN 360 - Anatomy and Physiology; Credits: 8 
  • BIOL 450 - Modern Genetics Credits: 4 
  • BIOL 255 - General Microbiology Credits: 4 
  • BIOL 670 - Immunology Credits: 4 

Chemistry Requirements

  • CHM 210 - Chemistry I Credits: 4 
  • CHM 230 - Chemistry II Credits: 4 
  • CHM 350 - General Organic Chemistry OR CHM 531 - Organic Chemistry I Credits: 3 
  • CHM 351 - General Organic Chemistry Laboratory OR CHM 532 - Organic Chemistry Laboratory Credits: 2 
  • BIOCH 521 - General Biochemistry Credits: 3 

Quantitative Requirements

  • One Math course (MATH 100 - College Algebra, MATH 150 - Plane Trigonometry, MATH 205 - General Calculus and Linear Algebra, MATH 220 - Analytic Geometry and Calculus I) 
  • One Stat course (STAT 325 - Introduction to Statistics, STAT 340 - Biometrics I, STAT 350 - Business and Economic Statistics I)

MLS Elective Requirements (Choose One) 

  • BIOL 530 - Pathogenic Microbiology Credits: 3 
  • BIOL 541 - Cell Biology Credits: 3  (preferred by hospitals)
  • BIOL 545 - Human Parasitology Credits: 3 
  • BIOL 609 - Cellular and Molecular Biology of Human Diseases Credits: 3 
  • BIOL 730 - General Virology Credits: 3 
  • PHYS 113 - General Physics I Credits: 4 

Clinical Training

  • DAS 001 - Medical Laboratory Science Clinical Training Credits: 6-12 (30 credit hours required) 

While the MLS degree only requires a 2.0 GPA to graduate, students are expected to have a minimum 2.5 in overall coursework and a 2.7 in all science courses. Keep in mind that the average student accepted into a clinical program has an average GPA of 3.5.
