The College of Arts and Sciences Well-Being and Belonging Committee was established in 2004 by Dean Steve White to foster a welcoming environment where all can thrive and benefit from different perspectives. It is comprised of staff, students and faculty members from different areas in the college.
Mission
The committee’s mission is to promote mutual understanding and a welcoming environment where everyone feels they belong and can succeed. The committee has action plans associated with five goals. It is subdivided into task forces concentrating on each major goal and is composed of overlapping members to maintain communication and solidarity among the entire committee.
These goals will support a rich, multicultural and welcoming environment for all students, faculty, and staff inside and outside the classroom. We hope that all constituents in the college will help contribute to our efforts.
Goals
Some strategies include: promoting a rich multicultural climate, improving inclusivity and providing education and awareness on the benefits of varied perspectives across the college.
Some strategies include: structured mentoring and tutoring, opportunities for fellowships, and other support programs.
Some strategies include staging professional development opportunities, understanding local and national realities and practices for recruitment and retention, and developing action plans based on those understandings.
Some strategies include: provide opportunities that educate the college community about knowledges, perspectives, cultures and histories of marginalized communities and social justice issues; encourage faculty participation in curriculum development via Tilford grants and other internal and external professional development opportunities; and reward student engagement related to promoting mutual understanding and social justice.
Some strategies include maintaining an updated website; communicating with department heads; and highlighting college programs that promote well-being and belonging.
