Bruce Glymour selected as philosophy department head

Bruce Glymour has been selected to be the department head for the department of philosophy in the College of Arts & Sciences.
"I'm excited to have Bruce continue in his leadership role with the department," said Peter Dorhout, dean of College of Arts & Sciences. "He is a great example of an engaged department head, someone who is excited about teaching and undergraduate research, which are two pillars of our college academics."
Glymour joined the philosophy department faculty as an assistant professor in 1995, before becoming an associate professor in 2001 and full professor in 2010. In 2011, Glymour was selected to serve as interim department head.
“I’m delighted and enormously proud to have been named department head,” Glymour said. “It will be a privilege, and quite a bit of fun as well, to lead the department’s excellent faculty and students as we expand our course offerings, increase the number of majors, and continue to produce the kind of research that enhances K-State’s reputation nationally and internationally.”
Glymour earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh before earning his C.Phil and Ph.D from the University of Dan Diego in 1993 and 1995, respectively. In his career, he has been a co-instructor with the Seminar in Scientific Ethics for the Research Experiences for Undergraduates program and a past board member for Kansas Citizens for Science and the Center for Origins at K-State. He is also a past Fellow of the Center for the History of Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh.
The K-State department of philosophy is an undergraduate-only department, which offers students an academic major and minor. The department has thirteen faculty members who teach 2,000 students each year in introductory philosophy courses, and another approximately 40 majors in advanced courses. The department has a strong tradition of research, which its award-winning faculty and students actively maintain with peer reviewed publications and both national and international conference presentations.
“Our philosophy department is among the best undergraduate-only departments in the country, and we will only get better in the coming years,” Glymour said. “I look forward to working with our faculty, students and Dean Dorhout as we begin to implement our K-State 2025 plans.”
