History of the Diversity Committee

Dean Steve White formed the College of Arts and Sciences Diversity Committee to foster diversity within the College in 2004, and it is currently sponsored by Dean Peter Dorhout. The committee was led by Professor Marcelo Sabates (2004-2007) and is currently led by Professor Kent Kerby (2011-present). The Diversity Committee is composed of 16 staff, student, and faculty members. Faculty represent different areas within the College and hold ranks of Instructor and tenure/tenured-track Assistant or Associate Professor, Professor, and University Distinguished Professors.

The Committee’s mission is to promote and support diversity in the College and reach out to other groups on campus to have a university-wide inclusive campus. Toward this end, the committee has drafted a Diversity Action Plan, currently under implementation, that contains six core short- and long-term goals. The committee is further subdivided into task forces concentrating on meeting and working towards each major goal and composed of overlapping members to maintain communication and solidarity among the entire committee.

These goals will strengthen a rich multicultural and diverse environment among and within students, faculty, and staff both inside and outside the classroom. We hope that all constituents in the College will help contribute to our efforts.
